We spruced up the muslin over dress that I had created for her marriage to Erling several years ago. Its so pretty and I love that she got to wear it again! She wore it over a Dark Garden corset and matching skirt. I was over the moon as I didn't really get a full length photo of this creation on the big day! The Empress was a vision!
Erling needed something to go under this coat that I had made for him quite some time ago. I was pleased that with all the wear and tear that this garment has gone through, I really didnt need to repair it at all. I found some pretty claret colored fabric and dandified him up with a new waistcoat and breeches. I did a lot of hand applique on the waistcoat and he does look divine if I do say so myself. We made it so that he could also wear it with a gorgeous frock coat that he had acquired through ACT.
Ive been pretty busy in March. Now that we have the longer daylight, I get more done (I spend my mornings doing admin and sourcing - plus all the errands......). Ive had lots of vintage alterations lately, which I dearly love. I'm finishing up a few projects and starting a few more.............gotta keep the flow going...........I helped style a bridal photo shoot with Black Lotus Clothing last week. We should hopefully see results of that in May.

Every now and then, I miss a call or someone doesn't call me back. I do my best to get right back to all of you, but please give me a few days just in case I'm in deadline mode! I treat your project as importantly as everyone else's and when Im really into working on your gown or costume, Im going to be focusing intently on finishing it up for you also. That may mean not being able to drop what Im doing just when I want to!

That being said, I always have to be revolving projects. So email me!! Call me!! Keep bugging me!!

April is promising to be busy. My shop at Tews Treasures is looking cuter every day. As soon as the rains stop, I'll be building a cute display wall so that I bring more fun things in - AND we have lots of events lined up! Ive got one more Bridal Show to attend this Spring!
Stay Tuned!!!!
KathleenCrowleyCostumeCouturte has opened up a little space in the vendor section at
Tews Treasures in Napa, California! Here is where I will fill a rack with vintage, samples, and fun garments at a reasonable price. I'll also have a few collectables and a piece or two ( or whatever I can cram in there ) of refurbished furniture! Im having a lot of fun with this!

My space is right next to Old Moon Vintage, who specializes in 70's and 80's clothing, and some fun things from the 90's, so we have a great little space carved out for ourselves among a bevy of artisans, collectors, pickers, and craftspeople. And we're cute and friendly! We love you!

The Tews family specialized in Consignment as well as offering a wonderful vendor collective. They are truly a treasure-trove. The merchandise appears and disappears at an astounding rate! I was working there yesterday and things were literally appearing and disapearing every time I walked in and out of the room - crazy fun! Lucky you if you actually live around there and lucky you if you are up there for fun! They also sell chalk paint in wonderful colors and have workshops on how to use it!
Lots of amazing events are planned for 2017, so keep checking in!

This week I sold a great little black and white polka dot raincoat, a full skirt I made from 50's fabric, and a dress or two from vintage materials. I'll be bringing new things up to keep my racks and shelves full every week! Keep checking in!
Black Lotus Clothing and Kathleen Crowley Costume Couture have teamed up to offer an alternative to off-the-rack wedding gowns!

Two small collections were designed by Christina Molcillo and carried into fruition by myself. We've got 1920's and Boho for you!

Initially, Christina will sit down with you first and discuss what you are looking for in a gown. Then you will come to me and we will make it work. I'll discuss your design and take your measurements. A mockup of the gown will tell us if we need to change something in the design to work best with your figure type. It also gets any corrections in the pattern taken care of before I cut into fabric. While I am working on your mockup, Christina is sourcing materials. Then what we actually do is hand the gowns back and forth until we get them perfect. I'll tweak the gown, she'll tweak the gown. She'll do the hand embellishing, but I might jump in or finish it. She might not like the bodice or I might think something has to be done differently to get the desired effect. Its a true collaborative effort. We do fittings.........we do it all. All 100% custom made from start to finish! Its magic!

Christina designed the set here in the pics, styled the shoots, and I helped out where I could. Im afraid that my expertise has to stay within the field of textiles these days........but we have taken this set and models and gown to three or four bridal events these last few months, and Im not beyond setting up and striking the set when needed.

Here are samples that Christina designed and two gowns that we worked on for private clients. These photos are just delicious. Im very proud of us!
As many of you may know, I teamed up with Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman of FatChanceBellyDance a couple of years ago to create a line of versatile clothing - both for dance and for fashion - and we carved a little sewing studio out of part of her dance studio in San Francisco. We've come up with some fun garments that have been doing well and this is where I sell the Bessie Skirt. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, the city had other plans for us and a dance studio that has been a huge part of my life for many, many years now has to close.

These things don't happen overnight, of course. Bit by bit San Francisco has been rubbing out its diversity with greed. The Bay Area is congested beyond belief. The commute into the city is a nightmare unless you hit it just right - and this is getting worse by the day. If you have to schlep lots of stuff around, public transportation isn't feasible, Parking is all but nonexistent, the landscape changes daily, businesses are gone overnight, citizens are fleeing because of the impossible conditions of trying to get by............and then it is exhausting to come back in............dance class attendance was down and getting worse because of all of this. Despite obvious interest in sewing classes, it was just too hard to fill a class............

I knew it was all over when I came into the city for our weekly meeting/ product development/sew-fest and the cheapish parking lot ( the only one close by) was closed. That was the nail in the coffin for me. And then the landlord died. Well, we know now what comes next.

So everything is changing and the studio is shutting down. Classes will be spread around to make it easier for all to attend and Carolena is opening a shop in Half Moon Bay where the Bessie line will be featured. There will also be online shopping, of course! The magic will continue and it will be awesome! There is much more fun to be had!

An era is ending, but a new one is beginning. Modernize Or Die is the new motto.
The Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Gala and also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City.
It marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute's annual fashion
exhibit. Each year's event celebrates the theme of that year's Costume
Institute exhibition, and the exhibition sets the tone for the formal
dress of the night, since guests are expected to choose their fashion to
match the theme of the exhibit. Each year the event also has honorary
celebrity event day chairpersons.

Details

The Costume Institute Gala is a major fundraising benefit that serves
as an opening celebration for the Institute's annual fashion exhibit.
Following the event, the exhibition runs for several months.
The Gala is widely regarded as one of the most exclusive social events
in New York and one of the biggest fundraising nights in the city. It is one of the most notable sources of funding for the Institute.
The affair, attended by personalities from the arts, fashion,
high-society, film and music, has been held at the Met since 1946 and is
considered to be the fashion industry's premier annual red carpet
event. Its red carpet fashions are widely photographed, reviewed, critiqued and emulated.

********************************************

Obviously this event is a big deal and generates a lot of donations to help run the Met's Costume Institute. It takes an insanely huge amount of revenue to bring us exhibits and do all the things. It has been slammed as a celebrity prom (whats wrong with that?) and there are always those who complain that the money used for $2000.00 manicures could be used to solve world hunger. Well, lets get real: it keeps your creatives and our suppliers fed instead. That is a big deal to those of us who like to eat as well. And then we trickle this money into all the other businesses of our choosing.
This. Is. A. Good. Thing.
We have all seen the celebrities on the red carpet at this event. If you didn't know better, you would assume that these are the only attendees...........but there is a whole event packed with plenty of people who paid big bucks to attend and who are wearing amazing pieces. They may not get all the attention, but they pay the admission price and they pay dearly to support the Museum and to stand out in the crowd. I was happy to help out this season................

Chris March designed a lovely ensemble for one of these generous ladies. She was very particular about the gown, the design, the fabric, the theme.............she was very hands on and had a great sense of humor. She loves dressing up and understands what it takes to make a project like this work. I made the mockup and carried out the design. We "made" the fabric. I sewed yards and yards of leather trim onto bias cut skirt pieces. I had a lot of fun with this!
This is what the skirt originally looked like when it was done. It fit her perfectly and she was thrilled, but after much discussion and contemplation, she had us cut out the back train. She wasn't going to have a crew available to help her maneuver the crowd. After having plenty of trains trampled in crowds myself over the years, I couldn't argue with her concern. I get it. So we took out some volume. It was still a pretty voluminous skirt and Chris took the opportunity to take the trim off of the discarded train and add more to the gown.............
Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen! As most of you - but not all of you - know, I have been helping Carolena E Nericcio-Bohlman
create a fun line of wearables that can be worn to dance class or cross
over into your day and evening wear! This is the Bessie line of
clothing that started with my Bessie skirt! This skirt was designed to
be practically lived in and Carolena and I worked on some improvements
to the design and then went on to make more great things to wear! The
Bessie skirt was designed to be worn in
more ways than I can mention here - I wear mine ALL THE TIME!!!!! I have
been seen chopping weeds and digging in my my garden in my old one -
and sashaying into a party in my newer one. It makes your butt look
dynamic!! All the butts.......
You can leave it down, or take one or more of the loops placed at the hem and attach them to one or more of three buttons at the hip line. You can wrap it around your body, wear it as a strapless dress, bustle it up in back or at the sides, or turn it into a pair of pants - I kid you not!

And now we have the Choli Dress, which is also a smashing success! It has a built in choli underneath, is open in the back, ties in the back like a choli, and has buttons and loops so that it can be worn in a myriad of ways!
It started with my making a mock up of the garment from her measurements on a plain muslin fabric, sending the mock up to the designer and the client to try on, making revisions to the pattern, and then constructing the costume. I use the mock up and revisions as the pattern. This part of the process is usually fun for the client as we draw on the fabric while they are wearing it. This must feel really odd and kind of funny at the same time! We made Prince first because his costume was more work. ( It was tailored and very form fitting ) While Cruella was a lot of work also, (lots of handwork with feather application to the sleeves ) hers was built so that the skirt and bodice was somewhat adjustable. The whole garment was lined and she had a drawstring in the bodice neckline for ease if necessary. The skirt crossed over at the side front so that some leg could peek out without looking too hoochie-mama.

Its the first day of May and Im very busy with completing a wedding dress and putting in my garden!
Clara just needs to try her dress on one last time, and then she can take it home. We got it done very quickly - which is somewhat unusual in my line of work. She got Christina Molcillo (my super amazingly brilliant partner is wedding dress making crime) and I at just the right time! Story and pictures will be coming once the bride gets married. We dont want to spoil the surprise, do we!
I have some tentative projects lined up, work on the Bessie line, a logo and new website that is being worked on ( Im itching to get this up!!!), revision and updating of my little sewing pattern line, friends going away and old friends moving back..........the constant ebb and flow...........and never knowing what each day will bring!
I made a Prince costume last Halloween. This was another fun project given to me by the wonderful Chris March. He has such great vision and we share that larger than life element that makes for good drama in a garment. ( Larger cant be large enough) We work really well together. I was commissioned to make it as exactly as I could - according to client and designer specs - which was not so easy, as the original fabric for the coat is not made any longer (80's) and was very hard to track down. But if I remember correctly, it was finally found in a fabric store located in New York, we got more than enough, and I did the best I could with the few good photos out there on the internet. Chris found something fun for the matching pants and vest. I found good buttons at Stone Mountain and Daughter. The client is a die- hard Prince fan and he must be grieving heavily right now. He had gone to such lengths as to purchase a copy of one of Prince's guitars. I listened to Prince music nonstop the whole time I was working on this outfit, so I was having a lot of fun. I was dancing a lot around the studio in the wee hours. This was a project with good memories and now I'm saddened after Prince's untimely passing, but glad for that point in time when I was immersed in the Purple One's Princedom. For many he was a big part of the soundtrack of one's life. His creativity touched us all.

I had almost forgotten about this project! Unfortunately, Prince's passing reminded me of it again. So I thought that I would share. Supposedly the client and his wife threw a three day Halloween bash and had an amazingly great revelrous time like it was 1999! ( as one should do when hosting a three day bash) I made his wife's costume as well, and have some photos somewhere that I'll post soon.
It always starts with a mock up. This was imperative since the client was living on the other side of the continent. But I would do it for someone living next door as well. It is always best to do this so that you get most of the fitting problems out of the way before cutting into the fabric. The collar was too high and I thought the bottom of the pants legs were a bit too wide, but the pants suited him and I cut the collar down a bit. I guess I could have cut it down more, but everyone was happy with it. It was Halloween, after all. You always end up putting some of your personality and flair into a costume - isn't that why people come to you in the first place? ( and knowing what you are doing helps! )

I had never made a front opening like these pants have, and of course, there isnt a pattern for this that I know of, so I had to do some pondering on that one. Its sort of like a drop-down sailor pant opening - on one side - on the diagonal. With a zipper and buttons. I'm not sure if there was a zipper in the original Prince pants, but I wanted no accidents.
Everything fit him perfectly and he loved it!
I generally use the pressed out and well marked mock up as a pattern. If I think I'll use the pattern again, I'll transfer it onto paper. I used to keep everything.. But now I throw it out after a year.

I lined his vest and pants because that brocade gets pretty itchy and I wanted him to be comfortable as well as giving the body of the costume some substance. I like costumes to be made as well as one would expect of a nice garment.
Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman, director of ,FatChanceBellyDance and I are starting our sewing classes again! We had such a great time sharing our accumulative knowledge and helping new and intermediate sewers make themselves some new costume pieces for their dance wardrobe, that we worked on a few things in our class program to make learning and working on projects much easier. We've moved our class times from Wednesday evening to Sunday afternoon, we've made a few revisions of the choli based on Folkwear's Tribal Style Belly Dancer #144 (In partnership with FatChanceBellyDance)) and are making samples of each offered size in the pattern so that we can have you try them on and get a better idea of sizing and fit! One medium C cup choli does not fit all medum C cup choli seekers! We are often several sizes in one and we've got a better system for you now.

Also we are also offering a new class! We will be making the entari from Folkwear's # 108 Turkish Dancer pattern! We all need a ghawazee coat, now dont we! These are fabulous costumes and coverups for Middle Eastern Dance styles and for all those fun Renaissance, Fairie, and Pirate faires! I have used this pattern quite a few times and will have a sample available as an example, but the fabric possibilities are endless!

So that's whats new for now. These are still held at Studio SF in San Francisco.
We have a couple options for you.
Hope to see you soon!:

Good
to know facts for new sewers: Most stores have mailing lists that will
mail you info concerning sales and discounts. Some stores - esp. the
chain stores cater to the home sewer only. Some stores cater to a more
affluent or professional clientele. Jo-Ann Fabrics has an app for your
phone full of coupons. Fabric Outlet usually has an ongoing "sale" and
other generous sales throughout the year. Britex has an occasional sale,
but generally carries imported fabrics that are hard to find in this
country. Watch for their remnant sale! Stone Mountain and Daughter
carries the biggest selection of designer cottons and blends. Etsy and
Ebay are also a good place to search for fabrics.

This last Wednesday wrapped up with our students completing a pair of pantaloons made from 4 yards of taffeta. We used the Tribal Dancer Folkwear Pattern designed by Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman. (she and I co-teach this class) They both picked the same fabric and color, but ended up using the pleating techniques in their own individual way. Isabel created smaller pleats and Helen created larger pleats. Both ways were challenging in their own right, and both ways of creating pleats created a lovely, blousy, full pair of dance pantaloons!

Next week, we move on to sewing a 10- yard skirt out of 8 yards of fabric! Go HERE to sign up or to find out more about it. Seating is limited, so hurry! We have a LOT of fun and a lot to share!

August 16th started my new project: a collaborative effort of sewing and textiles instruction with Carolena Nericcio - Bohlman. I have been sewing and making things since the age of 5 and Carolena has been sewing since her teens. She has formal training. She has an extensive knowledge of textile, sewing, design, construction, and costuming. She has a tribal belly dance costume pattern that has been published through Follkwear. I have an extensive knowledge of textiles, sewing, design and construction with a couple sewing patterns for sale under my belt. Ive done years of high end garment making and costuming. I design, do quality alteration work, understand the ins and outs of reading and following a pattern, I know how to make a pattern fit everyone or how to choose a design that will work for you - between the both of us, we have a lot to offer.

It is time. Time to break down the barriers between the sewing world and the world of the person who yearns to make things, but has no training. As we all know, the basics of making one's own clothing are skills that most of us are not taught any longer. We all should at least know how to sew on a button or hem a pair of pants. Many of us have fit problems or are sick of what the prescribed fashion of the day offers us.

So I took two new students down to Fabric Outlet: the local fabric store located conveniently down the street from the San Francisco studio, and I gave them a tour of the various sections. See - they don't look scared or confused at all!
Here are Isabel and Helen about to purchase taffeta for new pantaloons!

I grew up navigating fabric and notions because if was common for little 5 & Dimes to have a sewing department when I was a kid. More people sewed in those days and. it became second nature to me. We don't have access to all of that fabric abundance now. Most of us have never been in a fabric store. Our options are limited. Sewing machines that are now very user friendly scare us to death. What the hell is a bobbin??????????? And even though there is probably a Joannes or Hancock Fabrics near many of us somewhere.........most of us are still overwhelmed when entering the doors.

After our fabric store tour, I gave a little tutorial on the basics of a sewing machine. It helped. They now have fabric and notions that they were able to pick out without a lot of stress, and with some practice, they can take on their sewing machines with less fear. And there was a lot of laughter. That was a good sign.

Because Studio SF is set inside a belly dance studio, and because Carolena has her tribal pattern at the ready and our first students are dancers, we are starting three segments that pertain to ATS (American Tribal Style belly dance) : Pantaloons, Dance Skirt, and a Choli. The Pantaloons class starts on September 16th!

And with luck, our intention is to be able to move on to things like hand sewing, simple alterations, and MORE Folkwear patterns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG - there are so many to choose from and there are so many I want to make. What a great excuse!!!! :)

Register here - Space is limited, but we have room for a couple more students! Register now!!
Its still warm out here in this part of California, but Im feeling the Fall season coming on!
Ive been gradually marking down all the things that I wont be making any longer. Well, I'll make more slip dresses, but not in wild patterns. (I think)
And all these things would be cute for Autumn and Halloween parties!

Keep checking my Etsy shop because its gotta go...........message me there if you have questions!

And these dresses are adorable - and perfect for the Halloween season. Those colors: come on.............but great for other seasons as well.

The first of the year will bring changes that Ive been creeping towards for a while now! Stay tuned!
This summer is flying by! What have I been doing? Working on a wedding dress and Halloween costumes, developing a few new items for the Bessie line of clothing, prepping for a couple photo shoots, developing a few pieces of bridal wear, gearing up to co-teach a few sewing classes with Carolena Nericco - Bohlman in the fall, and slowly building a new website where everything can be all in one place.....all the time......that's all keeping me very busy!

Knitting in summertime?? Yes!!! Of Course!!! Now is when we prepare for winter!! And you wont regret it! Carolena will walk you through the steps of getting the right yarn and needles, gauges, stitches - all that stuff that will help you on your way to graduating one day to a sweater with 2 sleeves that are the same length!! It will also give you something fun to do on those long winter evenings while watching movies!

And starting at the end of July, we will be progressing onwards to showing you how to look for fabrics, learning how to not be afraid of your sewing machine, and how to make your own pantaloons, choli, and 10-yard skirt using the Folkwear Tribal Dancer pattern!

Now, there are lots of things that we want to teach you how to make (and have an excuse to make it ourselves), so once we get the tribal dancer costuming classes under our belts, we would like to include some of the other Folkwear patterns. And how do you choose which one............

So sign up for knitting and sewing!!!
Ive been sewing like a mofo all month and beyond for this great event! I'll have Bessie Skirts and assorted Bessie daywear and accessories as well as KCCC Sampants, dresses, vestaleros, skirts, hooded boleros - all kinds of things! A few garments still need buttons, but there are always lulls in the storm for that sort of thing. We'll be there for 6 days, so I dont need to put it all out at once anyhow. Keeps it fresh. :)

Come see us!!!
studio in San Francisco! I'll be working on my KCCC projects over here in
the Crockett studio and *mostly* working on the Bessie line of clothing
and accessories over in the city. So sorry to anyone who has attempted to contact me and didnt get an answer back.........Ive literally been pretty overwhelmed with juggling commitments and projects!

We now call the whole FCBD studio
"Studio SF". It houses the FatChanceBellyDance studio and store, the
Nakarali Jewelry Company, and the Bessie Design Studio and Boutique.
Carolena Nericcio- Bohlman has completely redecorated the whole place =
including swanky new fixtures and office! The dressing room is wonderful! Its coming along nicely!
Despite
the commute, I am liking this arrangement and I'm having a lot of fun!
Not only am I seeing new and familiar faces again, it has been awesome
for me to get out into the world - now I feel that I have the best of
both!!!! (and my favorite fabric suppliers are right down the
street!!!!! How I and my wallet have missed them so!)

At the moment, Carolena and I are learning how to master a new little
coverstitch machine that may very well be a game-changer in our
Slow-Fashion production. After we did some research, she ordered the Janome Coverpro900. We're working with that slinky drapey cotton/lycra jersey and while Ive previously avoided it like The Plague, there is no denying that it makes a fine, wearable garment that is economical to produce. We have a cute little top that would benefit by a good coverstitched hem and neckline and we've got quite a learning curve. We will both be taking classes in how to use her. And the reviews and tutorials in the PatternReview.com website are invaluable. So in true Gemini spirit, I am again in two places that suit
the many facets of my personality and skills. One always feeds off the other. The New Baby:
Every day we are rearranging and expanding our space - and making it work. And when we've got it a bit more under control and flowing smoothly, we will expand to include a class or workshop or two....we have a lot of great ideas that I think will be fun to share! For now, we are focusing on fullfilling orders, getting our stock up, and getting ready for vending at Cues And Tattoos in Seattle and then, of course, Tribal Fest! Not only did she have a blast, but I keep seeing pictures of her in it pop up in my Facebook feed. Gotta love it when you see someone getting a lot of use out of something you made!
I seriously have a hard time describing the ATS Homecoming event that was held this January.........what an endeavor! Week long classes and workshops. Three days of Vending. I put on a vendor fashion show and there were more performances than one could imagine. All American Tribal Style. All the time. Kudos to Carolena Nericcio- Bohlman and Terri Allred for putting this together and pulling it off! I was asking poor Terri questions constantly and her replies came faster than any promoter Ive ever worked with.

For those who may not understand what ATS Belly dance is, it is actually called American Tribal Style Belly Dance and is a style initiated and perfected by the troupe FatChanceBellyDance under the direction of Carolena who I mentioned above. I have been affiliated with these ladies in one way or another for a good 20 years. This was the first event of its kind that was completely 100% geared towards this dance style. Women came from all around the globe to attend. It was truly a homecoming...........
There was some down time during all the workshops, and we had a lot of time to hang out and catch up with each other - and then we would be swamped with either selling or catching up with our friends and customers - or both - and that's how these things work. Salomes' Suitcase came together once again to sell our unique and locally made artisan wares.
I threw together a fun little vendor fashion show on Friday night which
brought attention to the vendors and I think everyone benefited from it
nicely! And I got to know some of the vendors that I might not
ordinarily have talked to as much. I made new friends - always a nice
thing to experience......here is Cyndi Elliot working her Bessie as Carolena MCs in her Bessie...........

The tears they were falling like rain at the end of the event as the participants went home. There was so much bonding that week that it was hard for many to leave. I don't often see that. So we are all excited to participate again next year at the Hilton - a much better venue.Thank you, Carolena!!
